Story and Photos by Rodney Jones
The lure of one thousand bucks and fish bite about to explode was more than area anglers could stand. An hour before sunrise, the parking lot at the Circle Drive Landing on Badin Lake told the whole story. Angling teams had turned out in a big way for the Bethal Church bass tournament.
By day's end, both the money and the fish were at the scales. Forty boat teams registered for the competition and only one walked with the “Grand prize”. Twenty six of the teams weighed in fish as Badin began to give up her fish. Many of the teams turned in their five-fish limit. For the Bethal Church, the event meant they were able to add $3685 to their fund for a bible study trip to Wyoming.
Ronnie Morris and Bobby Morris found themselves at the top of the list after the scales closed. Their five fish weighed 21.13 pounds and swept the $1000 purse by over a pound.
Second Place belonged to Micheal Bryant and Mike Mane, who had five fish weighing 20.05 pounds. They won $500, still a great earning day.
Third placers, Steven Hill and Darian Crumbley, had four fish weighing 17.89 pounds for $300. They were also the Big Fish winners with a 6.24 pound fish that added $760 to their pockets. Their total earnings were $1060.
“The day began a little wet, but cleared up for a sunny day of fishing and weigh in,” stated Rodney Jones, a volunteer with the group. “There were a lot of folks turned out to hep.” Shane Hill, Randall Kearns and Patrick Shupe of Bethal Church starting morning out checking livewells, while Terry Cole, Shandra and Sandy Kearns, and Melissa Harrison headed up sign-in and entry fees. Pastor of Bethal Church, Jody Harrison, said a morning prayer, then Steve Sanders and his daughter Stephanie Hayes launched boats for blast off.
Bill Jones and Rodney Jones with The One Bass Club and Triple H Bass Club weighed in fish, with Terry Cole of Bethal Church recording weights.
Gifts bags of tackle, hats, t-shirts, gift cards and fishing rods where awarded by drawings and given out to anglers who participated. Anglers also enjoyed hot dogs fresh off grill during weigh in.
