Company Anglers Gather on Yadkin Waters
July 18, 2009
As the economy stumbles and companies across the globe struggle to make ends meet, many remain committed to employees and their general well-being. Yet another has stepped up in the central NC region by providing many of its employees something they would enjoy during off hours. Fiber Composites, LLC, located in New London, recently held an event designed to give its workers a chance to do something together outside and away from the local plant. The 1st Annual Fiber Composites Bass Fishing Tournament was an idea initiated by Frank Letto and it came to fruition last Saturday.
Present and former employees of the company were included in the invitations which featured breakfast for attendees prior to the safelight 6 AM launch. Tuckertown Reservoir was chosen as the lake to conquer and eight individuals took up the challenge. “We couldn't have asked for a better day than this,” stated Letto. “We might have been small in numbers, but we have begun something here. You learn each time you do something and I know we can grow this to something our employees will value. It's good for us to get out together and enjoy the fellowship without the pressures of the workplace.” Letto is also involved in a fishing tournament with a long history on Lake Tillery just a few miles down the Yadkin River chain of lakes. The Morgan Memorial Invitational has been in existence for nearly twenty years.
“I think everyone had fun out here today,” stated Mike Melton after the event. “We need to do this more often.” The event lasted for 9 hours on a day made for fishing, seeing lower 80's temps, low humidity and only a slight breeze blowing across the waters.
Not only was the organizing a joy for Letto, he managed to corral a win in the event that had a ten-fish limit. He and son, Joshua, carried in 29.9 pounds to the scales. Second place was earned by Kevin Morgan and Robert Letto, who found 5.9 pounds on the day. Johnny Harrington and James Lowe took third with 3.11 pounds.
The final position was claimed by Mike Melton and Phil Blalock with 2.5 pounds. If anglers didn't find the fish early, it was near impossible to find any later in the day. At about 10:30 AM, water was pulled from the lake, impacting fishing results greatly.
“We caught most of the fish at the south end, all in the same hole,” exclaimed Frank Letto. “Nine of our keepers came in the first hour,” he continued. “We came back at 2 PM and caught a few more.”
“This experience has been really good for all of us,” noted Letto. “We'll do this again much better and bigger,” he promised.
