NCBA Hosts Spring Tournament at Badin
April 11, 2009

Baseball and bass season. They begin at the same time of the year, so why not use one to help support the other? That's what The North Carolina Baseball Academy of Greensboro did Saturday, April 11th at Badin Lake. The group kicked off the first in a series of fishing tournaments at the Circle Drive Landing on the north end of the lake.

Turnout was good for the event, a two-person per boat and 8 fish competition. “We have a lot of father and son teams showing up,” stated Stephenie Hagerman, wife of tournament organizer, Theo Hagerman. “It's a fun day for these guys to be together.” The day-long activity ran longer than a baseball game in extra innings for sure. The group blasted off at 7 AM and didn't walk to the scales until 3 PM.

The NC Baseball Academy (www.ncbaseball.com ) is located at 1137 Pleasant Ridge Rd and offers complete instruction and coaching in all aspects of baseball, as well as weight training and team dynamics. The facility, directed by Scott Bankhead, is open seven days per week. The group participates in the 11U Travel Ball schedule.

After a day on the lake, competition was clearly as fierce as it is on the diamond for the “players”.  The team of Steve and Debbie Smallwood carted 7 fish and 20 pounds 10.8 ounces to the scales to win first honors. Second position, and just over a pound and a fish behind, were Mark Beck and Barry Cranford with 6 fish at  19 pounds 10.4 ounces. Rounding out the top three teams were Derick Livingston and Bryan Collins with 8 fish weighing in at 17 pounds 8.6 ounces.

The Baseball Academy 11 U returns to Badin Lake's Circle Drive Landing Saturday, May 2nd for another fund raising, bass tournament. A similar fund raising tournament for the Carolina Mustangs 8U Traveling Team of Lexington launches from the same location on Saturday, April 18th. Bass And Baseball Meet Head On
April 18, 2009

Eighteen boats and many more fishermen turned out on Saturday, April 18th to support the Carolina Mustangs 8 U baseball efforts. Badin Lake and the Circle Drive Landing hosted the crowd as the fund-raising tournament took to the local waters.

As surprising ninety percent of the fishermen weighed in fish at the end of the day, one of the few groups of fishermen on the lake that day who could claim good luck. The safe light blast off featured a variety of teams, including son and father combos.

“I can't thank everyone enough for turning out to support our efforts with these kids,” stated head coaches Dan Swami, Gray Faulkner and Stacy Hilbourn. “This means a lot to all the players.” The group is a Davidson County-based effort.

The event paid three places. First team of the day was the boat of Theo Hagerman and Jim Marsh who netted 24 pounds 10 ounces. Hagerman assisted in the tournament organization both this day and a week earlier with the NC Baseball Academy held at the same landing. “This is a great place to hold these events,” said Hagerman. “These guys really turn out and enjoy these annual events.” Participants come from all across the region to support the groups.

Second spot went to team Nick Nance and Tim Latham who found 23 pounds 4.5 pounds of fish on the day. Josh Noe and Tony Furr rounded out the paying positions with a third place, 20 pounds 8.3 ounces at the scales.

Big Fish honors was nailed by teammates Roger Vanover and Sonny Nifong who managed to ply a 6 pound 11.2 ounce bass from Badin's waters, one of the largest fish caught across the lake in competitions April 18.

NCBA Returns To Badin For Fund Raiser
May 2, 2009

The North Carolina Baseball Academy of Greensboro returned to Badin's Circle Drive Landing on May 2 for the second of two bass tournament fund raisers of the season in support of its 11 U ballplayers. Eleven boats turned out for what turned out out be one of the better tournament performances of the day on the lake.

“About 75 percent of the boats had the limit of 8 fish to weigh in,” reported Theo Hagerman, tournament director. “We were very pleased with those results.”

Buzz Dunlap and Pete Morris took the day with heaviest bag. Their catch averaged almost three-and-a-half pounds apiece, with a combined total weight of 27 pounds 7 ounces. They also boated Big Fish with a 6 pound 5 ounce bass, one of the larger ones pulled from the lake in the past few weeks.

Scott Cranford and Dale Cranford averaged two-and-three-quarter pounders to capture second. They brought an even 22 pounds of weight to the scales.

“It was a good day of fishing and even better for the baseball Academy,” noted Hagerman. “We really appreciate these guys turning out in support of our efforts with these kids.” The group blasted off at 7 AM and returned at 3 PM for a full day of two person per boat angling.
