Puckett Wins Old Lake Outing With 11.1 Pounds
July 18, 2009
Tuckertown Reservoir and the Flat Creek Access was a hum of activity Saturday, July 18th, and the Old Lake Bassmasters were a big part of that action. Eighteen anglers on fourteen boats from the club blasted off at safelight and plied the waters for nearly nine hours, looking for what others failed to net. The High Point, NC federated club figured their sixth event of the season might be the lucky one.
According to members, bite began well in the morning, but about mid morning that all changed. “The waters were pretty calm until 10:30 when they began pulling water pretty heavy,” stated president, David Ginther. “That current shut things down pretty fast and only the small ones continued to feed.”
Rodney Puckett did manage to find four keepers and led the way. His 11.1 pounds topped all other efforts and he managed to hang onto first spot as bags rolled in.
Second placer, Shannon Crawford bagged 9 and-a-half pounds to slide into second place. One of his fish, a 4.7.5 pounder gave him top solo fish for the day. Carl Reitzel tucked into third with 7.4.5 pounds.
The club uses an individual angler format, allowing two anglers per boat. According to member, Richard Strelec, the format has worked well for the group. “Lots of these guys want to compete and they enjoy fishing with some of the others,” he noted. “We would certainly welcome newcomers, even this late in the season.”
The club moves on to Lake Reese August 8 for their seventh of nine events. Their season begins in early February and ends on November. For more information about the group, contact Ginther at dlginther@att.net. A complete schedule can be found on the Fishbyte.net Calendar.

Sometimes the best bass are caught on the small lakes during the summer months. With less pressure than their larger cousins, these mini-lakes provide solid action and some good weights. That's what the Old Lake Bassmasters found when they traveled to Asheboro's Reese Lake last weekend.
“We found several fish over five pounds,” stated member Rick Strelec. “Most fish were reported as being caught on Texas rigged worms in 4-12 feet of water.” Despite the heat and high sun, the Old Lake anglers managed to catch fish throughout the afternoon. Lake Reese is an Asheboro city lake open from 7 Am to sunset, Wednesday through Sunday.
Rodney Puckett found himself in the money again finding 14 pounds 10 ounces and reeling in the $140 cash prize. John Haywood placed second to capture the $86 with 13 pounds 6 ounces.
Third place was won by Rick Strelec who netted 9 pounds 12.5 ounces. He won $54. Brenda Moore took the final paying spot with the Big Fish weighing 6 pounds 10 ounces. She won $80 for her efforts. Fourteen boats participated in the event that used a five-fish limit. Anglers blasted off at 7 AM and weighed in at 2:30 PM.

It took five fish to tame Lake Norman for the Old Lake Bassmasters on September 12th, but Lee Boone managed to claim that honor in the High Point area club's eighth event of he season. Tough fishing was the order of the day for every boat in the competition.
Boone's livewell held 8 pounds 8.5 ounces of bass, enough o capture first place on the day. One solo fish in that lot weighed 2 pounds 7 ounces and grabbed half of the Big Fish Pot. Second place finisher, Travis Dotson, accepted the other half with an identical weight fish. His total bag weight was 4 pounds 6.5 ounces in two fish. David Ginther rounded out the paying spots with three fish and 4 pounds 1.5 ounces.
The final two events of the season for the federated bass club will be on Falls Lake and Lake Norman. They will meet once again on October 10th and November 7th.

Haywood Wins Old Lake Classic On Kerr

It was a tough way to finish off a season, but the Old Lake Bassmasters traveled to Kerr Lake this last weekend to put a cap on a successful season. The affiliated club held their annual Classic just days after torrential rains tore through the region, leaving fish patterns all askew.
If unpredictability wasn't enough for the club anglers, the Classic comes with its own set of special rules. The event must be held on a lake not included in its regular schedule and there is no pre-fishing practice allowed. Angling teams must hit the waters cold on a completely equal playing “field”. Although the day was one of the nicest fall weather events in weeks with low winds and air temps in the seventies, the region saw as much as seven inches of rain over the five days prior to the event. Water temps hovered around 55 degrees.
“It was a tough day on the water after North Carolina took a pounding from Hurricane Ida for the days leading up to the tournament.,” stated Richard Strelec, club member. “The Classic rules made for quite the struggle.”
John Haywood was able to put together a very nice bag using plastics and jigs. His efforts included the Big Fish of the tournament. Total weigh of his catch was 6 pounds 12.5 ounces which earned him $300. The 4 pound 8 ounce solo added $65 to his day's earnings.
Beyond his solid performance, only two other fish were weighed. Bruce Thames placed second with one pound 12 ounces, earning $150, while Neil MacDonald placed third with a one pound 8 ounce fish worth $50.
For the second year in a row, David Ginther won the club's Angler Of The Year Award.
