Powers Swain Chevy Thanks Customers With Bass Tournament
May 16, 2009
By Hal Abshire

Lake Tillery and the Swift Island Landing on Highway 24/27 was a thank you gift to a number of anglers from across the region this past Saturday, as Powers Swain Chevrolet Fishing Team of Fayetteville treated customers to a bass tournament on the waters. Teams participating included three teams of father and son boats as well as a husband and wife pair-up.

'It's great to see families making good memories being on the water together,” stated Hal Abshire, one of the Powers Swain organizers. “It looked like everyone had a good time catching fish throughout the day.” The Cumberland County Chevy dealer (www.powersswainchevrolet.com) supports a fishing team of its own which competes in a variety of tournaments across the state and nationally. This event was something natural for them to do.

“It's really important that we continue to tell our customers that we appreciate them coming to our dealership, and what a great way to show them one of our interests. Fishing is something that so many people enjoy, and we like to share that experience,” continued Abshire.

The five-fish competition saw a swollen cloud cover throughout the day, but managed to avoid the worst of the area weather. Boating the biggest catch for the day were David Blanton and Lee Isham of Fayetteville with a 5 bass limit that weighed in at 11.28 pounds. Second place went to the boat team of Jamey Caldwell of Carthage and Tom Beers of Pinehurst with 4 bass that weighed in at 11.24 pounds. Both bag weights compared to some of the better taken from the area lakes in recent weeks.

The third through fifth place teams were as follows: Hal Abshire of Cameron and Allen Thompson of Wood Lake with a limit of 5 bass that weighed in at 9.88 pounds; Will and Wyatt Blanton of Fayetteville (Father and Son team) with a limit of 5 bass that weighed in at 9.16 pounds; and Max and Monica Altman of Angier (Husband and Wife team) with a limit of 5 bass that weighed in at 8.43 pounds. Big Fish honors went to the team of Caldwell and Beers with a 5.84 lunker. Second Big Fish went to the team of Doc MacDonald and John Strother of Fayetteville with 3.97 pounds of solo bass.

The event was the second tournament of the season for the Powers Swain Chevy Fishing Team.

Powers Swain Chevy Club Hits Roanoke River

Although the actual event kicked off on Sunday, the fishing stories flew and grew the day before for those participating in Powers Swain Chevy Team tournament this past weekend. The group gathered and fished the Roanoke River in Plymouth, NC on July 26th. Most of the teams came in one day before to enjoy a day on the river together and to swap fish tales, all thanks to the Fayetteville dealer's support of the group.

Team members bring a guest to fish these tournaments, or they can fish by themselves. Using a five fish limit per boat, cash prizes are paid back to the top five teams and to the two top big fish pots. The top three teams received special trophies from the supporting dealership.

The Roanoke River proved to be very tough for most of the group. Like so many of the lakes in the region, bite was very slow. Temperatures in the 90's with plenty of sun, made fishing tough and slowed the bass. “Put this altogether and you have a long day,” noted pro angler Hal Abshire. “But, everyone had a great time and are ready to hit the next tournament on Falls Lake  November 7.”  The group will use the Upper Barton's Landing.

The top five teams received special gifts from Flying Fisherman Sunglass, a company out of Islamorada, Florida, courtesy of Linda Sheldon. “You can be sure that these anglers will be sporting around in a new pair of Flying Fisherman sunglasses at the next event,” laughed Abshire.

Although the bass were difficult to find, the team of Monica Altman of Angier and  Mike Varano of Sanford grabbed first place with a limit of five bass weighing in at 9.37 pounds.

Second place went to the team of Todd Parker and Everette Clemmer, both of Sanford. They had a limit of five bass that weighed in at 7.81 pounds.

Third place was netted by the team of Jr. Lee and Jimmy Murphy both of Lillington. They had a total of four bass that weighed in at 7.40 pounds.

The team of James Wade of Loris, S.C. and Terry Tolar of Elizabethtown captured fourth place. They had a total of three bass that weighed in at 6.68 pounds.

Fifth place went to the team of Kevin Matthews of Whispering Pines and Steve Spivey of Whiteville. They had a limit of five bass that weighed in at 6.46 pounds.

Big fish honors went to the team of Doc MacDonald of Fayetteville and John Strother of Spring Lake. They caught a 4.62 pounder. Second big fish went to the team of Lee and Murphy. They caught a 3.12 pound bass.

Powers Swain has been supporting fishing efforts since 2001, when it first formed the Powers Swain Chevy Fishing Team. The group is made up of customers who are fishing enthusiasts.
