Light winds, low air temperatures and small fish greeted the Ridgeway Bass Anglers when they launched onto Belews this past weekend. Fifteen boats teams looked to prove the summer doldrums had left the lake as a cold front pushed into the region, but the pond decided it had other intentions.
According to club director Tommy Wilson, all boats caught fish, but size was a problem. “It was hard to find any keepers,” stated Wilson. “None of the 15 boats found the five-fish limit, although a number caught four.” The anglers had from the safelight blast off until a 3:30 PM weigh in.
Of the thirty-two fish weighed in, Billy Lawson and Tony Vernon found the most and the biggest to nail down first place. Their 8.1 pounds earned them $248. Second place went to John Peel, fishing solo, with four fish weighing 7.91 pounds, good for $135.Peel also had the tournament lunker of 3.47 pounds, good for another $150.
Joel Richardson, fishing solo, weighed in four fish weighing 7.07 pounds, good enough for third place and the $67 in prize money.
The Ridgeway Bass Anglers will hold an open tournament on Hyco Lake on November 7th. For more information about the club and that tournament, contact Wilson at bassman13@embarqmail.com.
Haley Wins Ridgeway Bass Anglers' Event on Hyco
December 5, 2009
It wasn't the best of days to hold an open bass tournament, but the Ridgeway Bass Anglers were about out of weekends in December to slip one more competition into a busy schedule. Five boat teams braved cold rains and battled muddy waters on Hyco this past Saturday.
According to director Tommy Wilson, conditions were about as bad as could be. “We fished and it was miserable,” he reported. “The lake was over full-pond by a couple feet and stained and muddy for the whole lake.” Only three of the teams weighed in fish and all had trouble finding anything over thirteen-and-a-half inches long. “No limits were brought in,” stated Wilson.
Besides it usual season schedule of ten events, the Ridgeway Bass Anglers have held a couple open tournaments in the past two months. The club is located just over the North Carolina border in Virginia, but includes a number of the NC lakes in its schedule. The first open, a visit to Hyco on November 5th, saw better weather conditions and greater success. December didn't treated the group as well. Only one place and the Big Fish of the day were paid out. The $50 entry fee included the lunker pot.
First place went to Kenny Haley, who weighed in three fish with a combined total weight of 6.54 pounds. He also caught Big Fish on the day, a 2.96 pounder.
The group is hoping to put another open together in January. For more information about the club, contact Tommy Wilson at bassman13@embarqmail.com.
