Although conditions for bass fishing may not be the best, striper anglers know their prey is out there and on the hunt. The Tar Heel Striper Club took advantage of the season, January 16th, when a record turn out hit Badin Lake's waters from the Circle Drive Landing.

According to club president, Jay Childress, twenty eight boat teams and forty four anglers from the club competed in the second event of the group's 2010 season. The club stresses teaching others how to striper fish. Although each event is competitive, it is done in a friendly spirit, according to the club's mission statement.

“I want to thank everyone for coming out. It was the best turn out we have ever had,” stated Childress.  “Not a lot of fish caught, but we still had a lot of fun.” The group meets in Asheboro at the Golden Corral on a regular basis to promote a family oriented, good fun, fellowship among friends. Dues are $30 annually and tournament fees are $20 per person ($40 max per boat) plus $5 per person for the big fish pot. The group uses a three fish per boat tournament limit and fish must be at least twenty inches long.

First place and big fish went to Jim Meritt, Mike Daniels, and Kenneth Tucker with one fish with a total weight of 7.50 pounds. Tommy Hackworth and Kathy Hackworth brought in one fish weighing 5.35 pounds to capture second. Third place finishers were Billy Cox and Brandon Wilburn with one fish weighing 4.65 pounds.

The club moves on to Lake Norman and the Pinnacle Point Ramp on February 13. Their next meeting will be March 1st. For more information, visit the club's web site at http://www.tarheelstriperclub.com/phpBB3/index.php or contact Childress at  919-478-6620 or chilly3@vzw.blackberry.net.

Striper Club Takes On Tillery
September 19, 2009

Any boaters and anglers on Lake Tillery last Saturday witnessed an army of larger fishing boats scattered from the north to south ends of the long lake. Overcast skies and virtually no water flow met the Tarheel Striper Club when the group traveled to the Yadkin River pond for their eighth event of the season last weekend.

According to the group's web site, http://www.tarheelstriperclub.com/phpBB3/, a total of 47 anglers made the trip on their quest to find the biggest stripers. Three anglers, Rodney Crisco, Mike Lundy, and Henry Sykes caught three fish, totaling 24.6 pounds to win the event. Scott and Steven Griffith found two weighing 15.4 pounds to place second. David and Debbie Lucas placed third with one fish tipping he scales at 6.15 pounds.

Club entry fees of $30 per year provides user access to their web site, a message board, and access to a private forum on the site. The club begins its schedule in March and ends in November. A final banquet is held in December. Eight different lakes are included in the tournament schedule that spans three states. Tournament fees are $20 plus an optional $5 per person for the Big Fish pot.

The group moves on to Lake Rhodiss October 17 for their next tournament event. They will use the  Malcolm Blvd/Connelly Springs Ramp and fish from 7 AM to 3 PM. More information about the club and how to join can be found on their web site.

Hill Wins High Rock Striper Tourney
November 21, 2009
Results and Photos by Tony Garitta

When November rolls around, a pile of bass fishermen turn to stripers. One group begins its search late in March and rolls up the carpet on an eight-event season the end of November. The Tarheel Striper Club, www.tarheelstriperclub.com/phpBB3/index.php. known as the premiere striper fishing club in the state, ended another successful season On High Rock November 21st with eighteen teams competing.

A resident expert who calls that lake home, Jerry Hill, beat all other teams with three fish weighing 24.50 pounds. Jamie Garrett of New London and Randy Garrett of Gibsonville placed second with three stripers weighing 22.55 pounds. Rounding out the top three were David and Debbie Lucas whose three fish weighed 21.55 pounds.

Big Fish honors went to Jordan Smith of Thomasville. His single 14.25 pounder beat all others brought to the net during the competition. Smith was fishing with JR Wilmoth, also of Thomasville. According to Smith, the big striper hit a blue bucktail lure with a white plastic worm as a trailer.

The Tarheel Striper Club fished eight events that began March 28 at Lake Murray. They travel to Buggs Island, Rhodiss, Hickory, Jordan, Badin, Tillery, and High Rock. An end of the year banquet will be held December 12th.
