Two Club Schedules Include Special Events For 2010
January, 2010

Two bass fishing clubs announced their 2010 schedules this week and both include special events for the coming season. According to Don Newsome, secretary for the Montgomery Bass Masters, and Jody McRoberts, director of the Triple H Bass Club, their regular seasons will add open events for North Carolina  anglers.

The Triple H Bass Club, a group that fishes on Sundays once a month, will add three charity events this year. Their regular schedule of eight events beginning February 28th at Jordan Lake, will end September 19th at Buggs Island. The group also fishes the Yadkin Chain, Philpot, Falls, and Smith Mountain lakes.

A charity event to raise funds for Girl Scout Troop 40853 for their Orlando trip will happen March 6th at High Rock Lake and the Southmont Access off Highway 8. Sixty percent of the $50 entry fee will be paid back in the 7 AM to 2:30 PM competition. For more information, contact McRoberts at 336-215-4402 or by email at  jmcroberts@triad.rr.com. Information is also available on the club's web site at www.triplehbassclub.com . The group plans to host two other specials to be announced at a later date.

The Montgomery Bass Masters have included two popular events each season for a number of years now. While their regular season will begin February 20 at their home lake, Tillery, the group will take a break from monthly events to host the 4th Annual Spring Open on the same lake April 3rd. That event will blast off at 7 AM and weigh in at 3 PM. Their annual fall event will take place September 25th on Tillery and the Swift Island Access off Highway 24/27.

The group fishes a variety of lakes across the state during its eight-event season. A switch from the normal approach, the schedule includes a number of night competitions during the hottest months of the year. June, July, and August events will take place beginning in the evening.

For more information about the club and its two open events, contact tournament director Michael Maness at 910-571-0022. General information about the club can be found by contacting Newsome at 910-572-7695.

Both team's regular season events, special events, and club information can be found on the Fishbyte.Net Calendar and Forums.

Triple H Kicks Off On A Muddy, Cold High Rock Lake
February 21, 2010

By Jody McRoberts

Early season weather patterns made for a tough day on High Rock as the Triple H Bass Club opened its 2010 season. Flood conditions caused ramp closures at Lake Jordan, resulting in a schedule change that landed Triple H Bass Club at the upper Yadkin lake Sunday morning.

With temperatures at launch hovering around 26 degrees, and water temperatures at 39 degrees, expectations for large bags at weigh-in remained low. That didn't stop 21 of the 27 anglers in the club from showing up ready to have some fun on the water. Most anglers were bundled against the cold in face masks and cold weather gear, nearly concealing their identity. The chilly water causes sheets of ice crystals to form on boat hulls and equipment in the early hours of the tournament.

According to director, Jody McRoberts, “Anglers found High Rock lake so muddy you could walk across it, with trees and trash floating everywhere.” Running full out was, “...like running through a maze if you wanted to keep your hull intact,” noted McRoberts. The haul was slim and one team claimed they even tried Texas rigging a Volkswagen with no luck.

However, two teams still managed to pull some fish from the mud hole and present them for weigh-in. Ron Woodroof and Todd Bullin won first place, weighing in two fish totaling 4.40 pounds, while newcomers, Jonathon Spivey and Derick Livingston, won second bringing 1.72 pounds to the scales. Todd Bullin won Big Fish with 2.57 lbs.

The next tournament for the Triple H Bass Club is on Tuckertown Reservoir March 21st. For more information about the group, contact McRoberts at 336-215-4402 or by emailing him at jmcroberts@triad.rr.com . The club's web site is www.triplehbassclub.com. Team Jones Wins Triple H Competition
April 19, 2009

When nearly 90 percent of your club membership shows up for an event competition, there's going to be some serious fishing happening that day. Such was the case for the Triple H Bass Club, as the group gathered at Badin's Circle Drive Landing for a Sunday blast off April 19.

“I am really happy our membership is so strong,” stated club founder and director, Jody McRoberts. “I didn't think these guys would miss Badin with all the action being reported here recently.” The day's activities boasted 25 anglers in 13 boats, with one single boater. The 1:30 PM weigh in saw numerous boats working the waters just off the landing for a final fish in what became a race to the finish.

While many look to land the one that changes the day in the final minutes, this event's winners were the first to land, almost 30 minutes before the second boat. “We had a slow bag,” stated Ricky Jones. “I thought it stood a chance of putting us in the money today even though it was light. The fishing on Badin has been really slow the last couple days and I figured anyone with limit stood a chance.”

Jones and boat partner Colton Jones waited in the occasional showers as other boats slid onto trailers. Their weight of 12 pounds 4.8 ounces turned out to be enough in the 5 fish competition. “Another 30 minutes probably wasn't gonna matter today,” laughed Jones as he accepted the $288 prize. Their boat also grabbed Big Fish with a 3 pound 7.1 ounce largemouth. That netted them another $120.

Second place honors went to Bobby Connors and BJ Rabon who managed 10 pounds .4 ounces on a lake that refused to give anything up all weekend. The $195 purse for the efforts was well-earned.

Third spot went to Bill and Rodney Jones who landed 7 pounds 3.8 ounces. Raymond Hamby and Greg Hamby captured fourth with 5 pounds .4 ounces. A highlight of the day was when Katie Motsinger, fishing with husband, Wes, weighed in her biggest catch, a 3 pound 3.2 ounce bass that narrowly lost the Big Fish competition. “Yeah, she caught it,” laughed Wes as onlookers teased him about being out fished. “That's a good thing,” he smiled.

Results of the competition mirrored all the endings of tournaments on the lake that weekend. Small fish here and there with spotty bed action met every angler on the waters. That hadn't been the case just a couple days before as Badin provided its usual bounty to anglers.

The club's next event is May 17th on Tuckertown Lake. The group will use the Highway 49 Landing for their 6 AM to 1 PM event. For more information about the club,  visit their web site at  www.triplehbassclub.com or contact Jody McRoberts at jmcroberts@triad.rr.com or 336-215-4402. A complete schedule is also listed on the Fishbyte.net Calendar.

Triple H Tears Into Tuckertown
May 17, 2009

For the Triple H Bass Club, you don't need good weather and calm waters to lure members to an event, and both perfect weather and smooth boating were in short supply for the nine boats that turned out on Tuckertown Reservoir Sunday, May 17th. A squall mid-morning sent anglers deep into coves for protection from white caps, driving rain and strong wind gusts.

Once the storm passed by, it was back to fishing points and working main channel weed beds. A few boats even braved the stump-filled main channel adjacent to the Flat Creek Landing on the north end of the reservoir. For winners, Ricky and Colton Jones, all the effort and soaking was worth it. As the pair neared the Highway 49 Landing where they had blasted off early that morning, bits of sun broke through heavy clouds sweeping by. Early to weigh in means either a poor bag or one stuffed with confidence. In their case, they thought their catch might be good enough to place them in the money.

The Triple H Bass Club, organized and run by Jody McRoberts, fishes a series of Sunday events from March 18 to October 18. The Tuckertown stop was the third on their schedule. Their next event is June 28th at High Rock's Southmont Landing from 6 AM to 1 PM. They end their season at Tillery. The club fishes a five-fish limit.

The Jones Team won the club's last event on Badin with a 12.48 pound bag. The partners nearly matched that weight at Tuckertown on this outing, bringing 9 pounds 5.7 ounces to the scales. Their efforts earned them $204 for a wet day's outing.

Second place went to Steven Davis and Travis Leonard. They lifted 5 pounds 5.2 ounces from their livewell to be weighed and earned $136.

Triple H Crew Runs High Rock
June 28, 2009

All the big money went back to Martinsville, Virginia with a pair of anglers who have found a string of paydays on North Carolina waters this season. The Triple H (Happy Hawg Hunters) Bass Club crew landed on High Rock Lake one day after the Walmart Bass Fishing League thought it had left nothing but sore mouths in the pond. A pair of Jones' corrected that myth.

Nine boats from the group that included 18 people left the Southmont Landing at daybreak, fishing until 1 PM. The anglers found keeping fish healthy that day to be tough going. While waters on the lower end of the main channel hovered around 81 degrees, while temps as high as 88 were reported from the Flat Swamp area. “It's really hard to keep fish alive and healthy in those conditions,” noted club organizer, Jodi McRoberts. “Guys moved away from the area once they saw what was happening. No sense in not taking care of your fish right,” he ended. Dam operators began pulling water from the lake late the afternoon before.

It was Ricky and Colton Jones who topped all at the scales in both total weight and Big Fish. Their solo honor-catch weighed 5.2.1 pounds, while overall fish pounds added up to a very solid 16.0.7. They earned a first prize of $205 and added the BF Pot of $80 when Ricky Jones landed the big one.

The second paying spot of two places went to Paul Oneal and David Treadway who netted 7.8.2 pounds of bass that day. They won the only other paying spot of $136. Triple H events are five-fish competitions.  The club moves to Tuckertown Reservoir and the Highway 49 ramp for its next event July 19th. They will fish from 6 AM to 1 PM.

Complete club information can be found on the group's web site at http://www.triplehbassclub.com or by emailing McRoberts at jmcroberts@triad.rr.com or by calling 336-215-4402.

Triple H Anglers Nail Bass Waters
July 19, 2009

Triple H returned to the Highway 49 Access on Tuckertown this past weekend, having hammered the bass there just two months before. Twelve to as many as twenty boat teams from the club have been chasing after green gills since March and this was their fifth outing of the season.

No strangers to the winners' circle, Ricky and Colton Jones from Martinsville, VA tied up first place once again in the eight hour matchup. On a day when weather was almost perfect to be outside, the pair fought through changing water conditions during the day, managing to put 12.9.5 pounds of fish in their livewell.

They also found a solo fish that outweighed all others, a 4.2.9 pounder. The pair paid for more than fuel, earning $192 for first and $85 for Big Fish.

Steve Davis and partner, Travis Leonard, hung 12.4.1 pounds on the scales to capture second place and $128. They were more than pleased with the outcome, knowing how tough the fishing was. Third place belonged to Todd Bullin and Ron Woodrow who walked in with 11.8.7 pounds and walked out with $85.

Founder Jody McRoberts was also pleased with the turnout and final results. “These guys enjoy this competition and know these lakes, he stated. “We've got four events left in our season and it only gets tougher from here on in.” The group moves on to Badin's Circle Drive on August 23rd. They will blast off at 6 AM and return for the 1 PM weigh in. Two Bass Clubs To Team Up On Bass In All Nighter

It's tough enough on the bass in area lakes when one of these clubs hits the waters chasing them, but add a second, skilled club to the assault and then do it all in the dark just doesn't seem fair. Directors Rodney Jones of The One Bass Club and Jody McRoberts of the Triple H Bass Club have announced a joint, all-night attack on the bass of Badin, August 7th.

Both clubs fish the Yadkin chain heavily during their regular seasons. This event is not on their schedules, but it seemed like a great idea to McRoberts and Jones. “All these guys know each other and fish most of the same lakes. This will give them a chance to mix and go head-to-head,” stated Jones. It isn't uncommon to see many of the same anglers participating in either of the two clubs' tournaments, but some members do not. There may even be some bragging rights involved.

For The One Bass Club, this will be a change of pace and strategy. “We fish for that one fish that outweighs the rest,” stated McRoberts. “After the first fish, you begin culling. This will be a real change for us.” Throwing fish back into the waters is common for these guys. Any fish you catch that is bigger than the one in the livewell replaces it. The event will use the Circle Drive Access Area and is open to current members and their families. It will run from 7 PM Saturday to 2 AM Sunday morning.

Both clubs utilize web sites for club information. These can be found at
www.theonebassclub.bravehost.com or www.triplehbassclub.com. Direct info can be gained by emailing Rodney Jones at TheOneBassClub@aol.com.

Triple H And One Bass Club Team Up On Badin
August 7, 2009

When the bass fishing gets really tough, it's sometimes best to double up on them. And, if two anglers have twice as good a chance to catch fish as just one, then two clubs together should be a pairing the green backs can't avoid. Hoping to back the bass into a corner, the Triple H Bass and The One Bass Clubs joined forces last Friday night at Badin's Circle Drive Access for a 7 PM to 2 AM smash.

“A lot of the guys fish in both of these clubs,” stated Jody McRoberts, director of the Triple H group. “We thought it might be fun to join up and do it in differently.” Different to these guys is a weigh in during the wee-hours of the morning, well after most humans and tree frogs have quit for the night. Once the bass are in, the only challenge to face is where to find breakfast at that hour.

For Bobby Conner and BJ Rabon, there was no need to rush away, as the pair were ready for photographs and prize money for their 10.8.4 pound winning bag. Their late-night ramblings earned them a hefty $240 in the 12 boat field.

Second place went to Bill Jones and his son, Jonathon Jones. The father-son team dragged in 8.8 pounds to be weighed in. They dragged away the $144 that the fish earned them.

Third placers, Sammy Crater and Mike White accepted the 2 AM prize for their fish total, a 7.7.8 pound bag worth $96. White also added the Big Fish honors to his boat with a 2.7.9 pounder. Catching that one fish was worth $120 to the partners, making them the second-winning-est team on the night's money trail.

Out of the 12 boat field, seven weighed in fish. The group used a five-fish limit for the night. Unlike most clubs that chase various bag limits, the One Bass Club does what it's name implies... competitors cast for the one biggest fish. It is a Big Fish only event.

The One Bass Club's season results and  information can be found on the club's web site at www.theonebassclub.bravehost.com, managed by Rodney Jones. The group is from the Archdale area of North Carolina. Steve Davis serves as president. They will move on to Tuckertown Reservoir on August 15th, using the Highway 49 Access point. The group will fish from 6 AM to 12:30 PM. A final Fish Off is planned for October 10th at a lake to be determined.

For the Triple H Bass Club, it's on to Badin's Circle Drive on August 23rd. They will blast off at 6 AM and return for a 1 PM weigh in. For more information about the club, contact McRoberts at 336-215-4402, by email at jmcroberts@triad.rr.com , or through his web site at wildlife@livingreflectionstaxidermy.com . Bass Aren't There For Triple H Bass Club
August 23, 2009

Most of those competing in Sunday's Triple H Bass Club knew the fishing on Badin had been slow for weeks now, and some had heard how bad it was the day before their event there August 23rd. Nearly everyone figured it had finally bottomed out and things could only get better. The bass of Badin had a completely different idea and were a “no-show” on Sunday. Boat teams that commonly bring limits in on tough days could barely find a keeper.

Blasting off from the Circle Drive Access ramp was the easy part of the day for the seven boat teams that turned out. “I caught my first fish within five minutes of the start,” stated director Jody McRoberts. “I thought... man, it's gonna be a great day!” Turns out that fleeting moment was about it, but it was more than some experienced. Finding the six-fish limit was just a dream for everyone that Sunday. Only the winners managed that number.

Ricky and Colton Jones, as they have done so often this season, proved they could find fish even when there were none to be had. The father and son team found seven keepers, culling one near the end. “We had a lot of trouble keeping the fish alive out there today,” stated the younger Jones. “I don't know what was going on, but a number of the guys had the same trouble.” One thing they didn't have a problem with was accepting the $180 in prize money for the first place 10.6.9 pounds they did bring to the scales. Mixed in that total was Big Fish for the day, a 3.1.8 pounder that added $70 to their keep.

Steve Davis and Travis Leonard stepped into second with 4.17 pounds at the scales. They won $120 on one of the best weather days anglers had experienced recently. Air temperatures struggled to climb above 80 degrees with a heavy overcast. A stiff breeze made staying on points difficult.

Triple H moves on to High Rock September 20th, using the Southmont Landing from 6:45 AM to 1:45 PM. The club has a web site at www.triplehbassclub.com. More information can be gained from McRoberts at 336-215-4402 or by emailing him at jmcroberts@triad.rr.com. Triple H Bass Club Ends Season On High Rock
Happy Hawg Hunters Name Champions

September 20, 2009

There was not much doubt in anyone's minds who the tallest trophies would be handed to after the final scheduled event of the Triple H Bass Club's season. Ricky and Colton Jones, both from just over the border in Virginia, had been making the long trek down for months to join in with the group and had amassed an insurmountable lead. That was fortunate for the pair, as High Rock treated them to their worst outing of the season on Saturday.

Beginning with the season opener on Jordan Lake back in March, ten to twenty boat teams a month have launched onto five different lakes in search of bass. The group maintains a web site, www.triplehbassclub.com, keeping members up-to-date on events and the club points chase. Jodi McRoberts, who owns and operates Living Reflections Taxidermy wildlife@livingreflectionstaxidermy.com ,serves as director of the club.

Although the Virginia Jones champions struggled to find anything in the last event, a few teams struck it rich. BJ (Bobby) Rabon and Bobby Conner hit the “swamp” and dragged home five fish weighing 17.19 pounds to capture the day's top spot. They also pulled Big Fish out of their livewell, a 4.53 pounder. First place paid $192 and Big Fish another $75.

Ron Woodrow and Todd Bullin tucked second place away with 13.34 pounds of bass. They earned $128 for that effort. Kate and Wes Motsinger took third with 8.53 pounds, while Paul Oneal and David Treadway finished in fourth with 7.56 pounds.

In ceremonies after the weigh in, Ricky and Colton Jones accepted the season's championship trophies and congratulations from members. Paul Oneal also received recognition and a trophy for catching Biggest Fish of the season, a 5.93 pounder.

The Happy Hawg Hunters Bass Club holds one final non-points Fish Off October 18th at Lake Tillery. The group will use the Swift Island ramp off Highway 24/27. They will fish from 7 AM to 3 PM. For more information about the club, contact director Jodi McRoberts at 336-215-4402 or email him at jmcroberts@triad.rr.com.
