Gordon And Burleson Prove Bear Creek Mastery On Wylie

When the Bear Creek Bass Club rolled into “Lake Wylie town” last weekend, one bass team had something to prove and defend. Returning as the 2009 winners of the pond, a lot of pride was on the line and they needed to prove they were the masters of the lake. The only way to do that was to repeat.

Twenty five boat teams rocked the lake, beginning at 8 AM from the Copperhead Island landing. At the end of the day, fourteen of those teams would bring a five-fish limit to the 4 PM scales. Average fish weight would be just over 2.2 pounds and ninety-nine of them would hit the weigh-in basket. For Lewis Gordon and Randy Burleson, the competition was stiff.

Saturday provided the club with sunny skies and water temps that rose from 54 to 60 degrees by day's end. Waters were stained throughout the lake. The March Wylie event would pay four places and two Big Fish honors from the $30 entry fee.

The Bear Creek Bass Club holds eleven events during the season. Two of those are two-day competitions. Their season ends in November. Annual dues are just $40 and monthly meetings are held. Ryan Mullis serves as president.

After the long line of members weighing in fish was complete and scales were closed, Burleson and Gordon had done it again. The partners had a two-year total of 43.06 pounds; 20.66 pounds of it came this year. The winners could claim mastery of the lake and a $200 payday. They also scored Second Big Fish and added $95 to their winnings.

Second place belonged to Bill McCoy and Tommy Russell who netted an impressive 16.24 pound sack that included Big Fish, a 6.06 pounder. They pair took home $150 for second and $140 for the lunker.

David Strider and Ken Troutman hauled 13.98 pounds in and captured third place, which paid $100. The final paying position went to Emmitt Ray and Martin Ledford who had 13.40 pounds for $50.

The club puts Wateree in its sights next month, Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18 for the first of two longer events in their season. They return to Wateree in October for a second, two-day competition.

Southfork Bassmasters Dominate TBF Youth State Championship at Lake Wylie
June 27, 2009
By Bob Bauer

On a very hot and humid Saturday, 29 anglers from across the state competed in the TBF Youth Championship at Lake Wylie. After a week-long warming trend, many of the young anglers struggled to find the fish that had been running the banks in previous weeks at Lake Wylie. But, as usual, when you put the best young anglers from across the state on a body of water, some will figure it out.

Southfork youth anglers comprised 4 of the top 6 positions across both divisions. In the older age division, 15-18, Dylan Flowe of Sportmans Bassmasters out distanced Cody Stegall of Southfork for the title by .66 pounds, with both anglers bringing in limits. The top five were as follows:

15-18 Division
Dylan Flowe Sportsmans Bassmasters 5 fish – 10.07;
Cody Stegall Southfork Bassmasters 5 fish – 9.41;
Josh Farley Renegade Bassmasters 5 fish – 9.07;
Tim McMillan Carolina Bassers 3 fish – 5.24;
Taylor Schneider Southfork Bassmasters 3 fish – 4.83.

State Team 2009

In the 11-14 age division, Kendall Seitz crushed his division with the only limit brought in by a younger angler, winning by a 3.63 pound margin.
Kendall rode his topwater bite to his first State Championship.

11-14 Division
Kendall Seitz Southfork Bassmasters 5 fish – 9.26;
Joshua Weddle Southfork Bassmasters 2 fish – 5.63;
Mike Guin Southfork Bassmasters 2 fish – 4.42;
Chris Carnes Southfork Bassmasters 2 fish – 3.61;
Brad Culler Southfork Bassmasters 2 fish – 2.73.

Southern Crappie Assoc. Wraps Up With Classic At Wylie
March 27 – 28, 2009

SCAThe Southern Crappie Association reeled the final line in on a successful 2008 – 2009 season with their weekend-long Classic at Lake Wylie March 27 and 28. Bass Proshops was the initial gathering place for the awards banquet Thursday evening. Nearly 100 members packed into the upstairs conference area for the meal, year-end tributes and instructions for the grand finale. What lay ahead would be two days of grueling competition.

Association president Melissa Hinson and V.P. Mark Danque distributed sponsor awards that included prize's from Minn Kota, Southern Crappie Rods, B&M Poles, Wally Marshall Signature Series Rods and Board Branch Woodworks. Door prizes from these sponsors and Bass Pro were in abundance as most everyone walked away with an item. Association officers even lined up a car hood from Kevin Harvick's NASCAR race car as a prize. In total, the Association presented over $22,000 in prize money and awards during the season.

SCACreating big applause was the Sportsman of the Year award given to favorites Lowell and Betty Cable. Both seemed surprised and a bit embarrassed as they accepted the award from fellow members. “We enjoy fishing with all of you,” stated Lowell Cable. “And, we enjoy doing this together.”

Point standing winners for the season were Russell Riley and Allen Outlaw. Their prize was a $1,000 take-home check.

Early Friday morning members headed for Ebenezer State Park Landing on Lake Wylie for the final two days of competition. While numerous boats wandered off into the dark beginning at 5 AM, actual fishing could not begin until 7 AM. All registrations for the final event are completed in advance, so boats can hit the water as they choose. Each day anglers are limited to their ten-best crappie. The event features a cumulative total for both days for most weight and awards a biggest fish prize.

SCA“There's a lot on the line with this event,” stated Hinson. First place pays $3,000 and second pays $1,620, so these folks are serious. There's a lot of pressure on the first-day leaders to hold on.” Both day's weigh ins occur at 3 PM.

Friday's competition began in a bit of fog and rain, and threatened all morning. It finally came down to stay shortly after noon. A steady drizzle covered the area and competitors as they all anxiously watched the first days efforts roll to the scales. The happy, but very nervous team of Lynn Robertson and David Hinson, both of Lancaster, SC found 19.07 pounds of crappie and were at the top of the leader-board after Day 1. “It's gonna be close, really close,” stated Roberston when referring to the finale the next day. “I just wish it was over I'm so nervous,” he chuckled. The Association fishes 6 events during their regular season and ends with the two-day, March Classic. Their season begins the first week of October.

SCASaturday's weather provided no let up in conditions as boats began in the rain. In the end, Day 1 leaders had to give up their spot to Team Randy Pope and Jerry Pruitt who took home the $3,000 grand purse and a variety of prizes. Their 34.43 pounds of crappie beat second place winners Rod and Braxton Wall by 1.43 pounds... about one good fish weight. The Walls did walk away with the Top Adult/Youth Award for the season, 2nd Big Fish in the Classic, and 2nd in the Sponsor Drive Award. “We couldn't have lost to a better team,” stated Wall.

According to Pope, they caught their fish on Lindy’s Grubbs using Stren Magna Thin Line shooting docks from the upper part of the lake to the back of Allison Creek. “Some people say you do it for the money,” stated Pope. “I do it because I love to Crappie Fish!”

SCAThe Hill’s Minnow Farm Classic Big Fish was won by Jimmy Hood & Sandy Haseldon. Their Big fish weighed 2.62 pounds and was caught on red and chartreuse Slider, trolling in Boyd Creek. “Glad to get it, really needed it,” laughed Hood.

A complete listing of Classic final placement and sponsor awards can be found at the end of this article. For more information about the Southern Crappie Association, visit their web site at  http://www.southerncrappie.com or contact President Melissa Hinson at melissa@southerncrappie.com.
